What's the Deal with AI in Europe Anyway? (And Why Should we Care?)

You know, I've been watching the whole AI thing and also developing my own AI system, and it's all like a particularly chaotic cooking competition.

Everyone's throwing ingredients in a pot, hoping to create the next culinary masterpiece, except instead of soufflés and sauces, we're talking algorithms and neural networks.

And the kitchen? Well, that's the entire world.

Now, everyone's been buzzing about the US and China in this AI race, like they're the only two chefs in the kitchen.

OpenAI raising billions?  DeepSeek capturing attention?  Sure, sure, they're making a lot of noise. But what about Europe?  Are they just sitting there, nibbling on some stale croissants while everyone else is cooking up a storm?

Absolutely not!  They’re quietly building their own AI empires, and it’s high time we took a look.

Just the other day, I heard they're having some big AI summit in Paris. Heads of state, tech leaders, the whole shebang. Probably going to announce some fancy investments and talk about AI safety and the environment. You know, the usual stuff. But what’s really going on?

Well, some clever folks at Galion.exe, Revaia, and Chausson Partners (try saying that three times fast) decided to dig a little deeper. They put together something called the French AI Report, which is like a Michelin guide for AI startups. And guess what? Europe’s AI scene is booming.

We're talking serious money here. In 2024 alone, AI companies snagged about 20% of all venture capital funding in Europe.

That’s like $8 billion! And that number is only going to get bigger, because most of these AI startups are still in their early stages.

Think of them as the culinary equivalent of a food truck – lots of potential, just waiting for their big break. 70% of the capital raised by AI startups in 2024 was for seed to Series B rounds. They’re still learning to flambé, if you will.

Now, where is all this money going? Unsurprisingly, the countries that usually attract VC funding are also the AI hot spots. The UK is leading the pack, followed by France and Germany. Even the Nordics are punching above their weight.

It’s like they’ve all decided to become AI Vikings, conquering the digital world with their innovative algorithms.

And here’s a funny thing: as these AI companies grow bigger, they start attracting international investors, especially from the US. It's like the American chefs are coming over to Europe to see what all the fuss is about.

They’re probably thinking, “Hey, maybe we should add some of that to our recipe.” US VC firms account for around 50% of the money invested in AI companies at Series C and later.

France, in particular, is a hotbed of AI activity. Apparently, they have over 750 AI startups, creating 35,000 jobs. That's a lot of code being written! And they've got 2,000 AI researchers and 600 PhD students working on this stuff. You know, the brainy types who actually understand how these algorithms work. Although, let's be honest, sometimes I think they don't even know how they work. It’s like magic, but with more math.

The French AI Report also highlighted some of the rising stars in the French AI scene. Some names you might recognize, like Mistral AI and Poolside. But most of these startups aren’t trying to build the next big foundation model.

They're focusing on more practical stuff.

Think of it this way: they're not trying to invent the oven, they're trying to create the perfect pizza recipe.

Some companies are working on improving the infrastructure, like Linkup and Kestra, who are optimizing data workflows. Others, like ZML, are boosting inference performance. And then there are companies like Dust, which are developing AI agents that can sift through mountains of data and make us all more productive.

Because, let's face it, who doesn't want to be more productive?

We're all just trying to get through our to-do lists before the robots take over.

But the majority of French AI startups are focusing on specific industries. The report highlights healthcare and climate as two big areas. In healthcare, companies like Owkin and Bioptimus are leading the charge.

They’re working on everything from imaging tools to drug discovery to improving medical treatments. It's like they're trying to build a robot doctor, but hopefully one with better bedside manner than some of the human ones I've met.

And then there’s the climate tech sector. While everyone else is using AI to optimize their online shopping experience, these companies are using it to save the planet. They're working on things like agritech, carbon management, and energy efficiency.

They're even developing new materials, like Altrove. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, AI, can you fix this whole global warming thing?”

Of course, not all of these startups are going to survive. That’s the nature of the game. But many of them are growing rapidly. We're still in the early days of the AI revolution, and it’s not a zero-sum game.

It’s not about one country or one company “winning.” It’s about everyone contributing to this crazy, exciting, and sometimes slightly terrifying world of artificial intelligence.

So, keep your eyes on Europe, folks. They might just surprise you. And who knows, maybe they’ll even invent an AI that can write blog posts. Then I'll really be out of a job.
