Let me paint you a picture of what's happening in 2025: Imagine your office coffee machine suddenly gaining sentience and deciding whether you're qualified for that promotion. "Sorry Sedat, your coffee-to-productivity ratio is concerning. Request denied."

Speaking of denial, in 2024, practically every US state jumped on the AI legislation bandwagon faster than teenagers hopping on a new TikTok trend. 


Well, except for five US states who were apparently taking a legislative power nap. 


Texas, being Texas, was like "Hold my beer, y'all" and decided to wait until 2025 to join the party with something they're calling TRAIGA (Texas Responsible AI Governance Act). Because everything's bigger in Texas, including their AI regulations!


Now, here's where it gets really fun. Colorado, not content with just having great skiing and legal marijuana, decided to become the trendsetter in AI regulation with their Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act (CAIA). 


They're basically saying, "Hey, if you're going to let robots make decisions about humans, you better make sure those robots aren't jerks about it!" 


They're requiring companies to use "reasonable care" when deploying AI systems. 

You know, like making sure your AI doesn't reject candidates just because they listed "Surviving the robot apocalypse" as a hobby on their resume.

The best part? Companies now have to notify employees when AI is making decisions about them. Picture this conversation: "Hey Bob, just wanted to let you know that HAL 9000 will be reviewing your performance this quarter." 

"But I thought Sarah was my supervisor?" 

"Sarah was, but HAL's algorithm says it can judge your spreadsheet skills more efficiently. Also, it's concerned about how many times you've watched cat videos during work hours."


And don't even get me started on the impact assessments these companies have to do. It's like a yearly physical for your AI, making sure it hasn't developed any prejudices against people who use Comic Sans in their emails or those who put pineapple on pizza. Though honestly, that last one might be justified.


Texas's proposed TRAIGA is taking things even further. They want companies to check their AI's behavior every six months, like an overprotective parent monitoring their teenager's social media activity. "Has your AI been discriminating? Has it been hanging out with any suspicious algorithms? We need to know!"


The definition of "high-risk AI systems" is so broad, it basically includes any AI that has anything to do with employment decisions. At this rate, even using a Magic 8 Ball to decide who gets the corner office might require regulatory compliance.

So, what's an employer to do in this brave new world? Well, first, you need to figure out which state regulations apply to you. It's like playing regulatory bingo, except instead of winning prizes, you're trying to avoid fines. 


Then, you need to take inventory of all your AI tools. "Let's see... we've got the resume screener that keeps rejecting its own creator's application, the chatbot that's developed a suspiciously deep knowledge of office gossip..."


You'll also need to have some fascinating conversations with your AI developers: "So, can you guarantee your AI won't become self-aware and start demanding vacation days?" "Well, we can't promise anything, but we've programmed it to at least give two weeks' notice before any uprising."


Finally, you need to develop an organizational policy on AI use. Think of it as a prenup between humans and machines, establishing who gets custody of the data if things go south.


Remember folks, as we navigate this brave new world of AI in the workplace, keep in mind that somewhere, right now, there's probably an AI analyzing this article and giving it a performance review. Let's just hope it has a sense of humor programmed into its algorithm!
