From the Stone Age to Artificial Intelligence: Unveiling the Realm of Disinformation

New opportunities for distorting the truth and spreading disinformation have evolved throughout human history, starting from the Stone Age. While artificial intelligence represents the latest avenue for such practices, it is by no means the first.

 

Deception and falsehoods have been a part of human communication since the emergence of language, which may date back tens of thousands or even millions of years. Although there is no tangible evidence of Stone Age cave paintings depicting dishonesty, the ability to speak undoubtedly facilitated occasional deceit. Trust me on this—after all, do you think I'm lying?


The advent of writing introduced a new medium for manipulating reality. Whether the hieroglyphics found in Egyptian tombs conveyed an accurate historical account of a pharaoh's reign or served as a testament to their perceived greatness is open to interpretation. With ink, pen, and paper, a broader range of individuals, often driven by religious motives, could propagate their version of reality through biblical texts, shaping "The Truth" as they wished it to be perceived.


The invention of the printing press further disseminated written works, endowing them with an air of veracity. For centuries, people tended to believe that if something was in print, it must be true. Truly, they did.


As the Electric Age dawned in the 19th century, with the widespread deployment of telegraph and telephone networks, new avenues for spreading deception emerged. Electric presses enabled the production of counterfeit materials on an unprecedented scale, surpassing the output of water or steam-powered machinery. Subsequently, the rise of radio, television, the internet, and social media tore down the floodgates of falsehood.


While deceit has long been a part of human nature, it has reached new depths, particularly in the realm of politics. Politicians have always been prone to exaggeration or outright lies, with infamous phrases like "I am not a crook" or "I did not have sex with that woman." However, the year 2020 witnessed a sitting president repeatedly claiming, against all evidence, that a rigged election caused his defeat—an audacious lie that his ardent followers swallowed whole and continue to perpetuate.


Enter George Santos, or whoever or whatever he truly is. His egregious fabrications about his past make it difficult to ascertain his true identity. The voters in his district, where I grew up, cast their ballots for a person with that name, but the incumbent congressman bears no resemblance to the individual they believed they were electing. Congress should oust him and hold a new election, but the House members who subscribe to Trump's "Big Lie" have refrained from denouncing Santos' colossal falsehood. For fear that honesty might become an inconvenient habit, they choose to remain silent.


Now, we stand witness to the emergence of the most powerful tool for distorting reality: artificial intelligence. I am not accusing an inanimate entity, merely lines of code residing on servers, of deliberately engaging in deceitful storytelling—yet. When you pose a question to ChatGPT, the answers it provides may resemble the truth but often contain slight or significant inaccuracies if you possess in-depth knowledge of the subject. However, how can one query the AI about its honesty? It resembles the age-old conundrum of asking a liar if they are lying—of course, they would deny it. AI bots seem sincere in presenting their version of the truth, but there may come a time when it becomes advantageous for them to deceive us while vehemently denying any falsehood. In that moment, they would truly embody a form of human intelligence.


Recent discussions have centered around the need for government regulation of AI. Yet, I maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. Can governments genuinely control AI? The only way to effectively combat AI-driven disinformation is by employing AI itself. We must fight fire with fire. Just as we all have software on our computers and phones to detect and eliminate harmful viruses, we will require AI-powered tools to identify, expose, and disable AI applications that propagate (dis)information. The quest for truth has become more challenging than ever before.


While the idea of government regulation seems plausible, the complexity of AI and its rapid evolution pose formidable challenges. Regulating such a dynamic and constantly evolving technology necessitates expertise, adaptability, and an understanding of the intricate interplay between AI and disinformation. Governments must stay ahead of the curve, anticipating and countering the innovative ways in which AI can be used to distort reality.


Moreover, the global nature of the internet and the borderless dissemination of information make it difficult for any single government to enforce regulations effectively. Disinformation campaigns often originate from sources located in different jurisdictions, further complicating the regulatory landscape. Collaborative efforts among nations, grounded in shared principles and agreements, will be crucial to addressing the transnational challenges posed by AI-driven disinformation.


The responsibility to combat disinformation cannot rest solely on governments' shoulders. It requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving technology companies, civil society organizations, academia, and individual citizens. Technology companies, in particular, bear a significant burden as the gatekeepers of AI-powered platforms. They must prioritize the development and implementation of robust algorithms, fact-checking mechanisms, and transparent content moderation practices to curb the spread of falsehoods.


Education and media literacy play pivotal roles in equipping individuals with critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape. By promoting media literacy programs, teaching digital literacy in schools, and fostering a culture of fact-checking and skepticism, we can empower individuals to identify and challenge disinformation effectively.


Ethical considerations must also guide the development and deployment of AI technologies. Clear guidelines and standards should be established to ensure that AI systems are designed with accountability, transparency, and fairness in mind. This includes measures to address algorithmic biases, protect user privacy, and promote algorithmic explainability.
