Google Launches AI Chatbot Bard to Compete with Microsoft's ChatGPT

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots has taken the world by storm in recent years, with programs like Google's Bard and Microsoft-backed ChatGPT leading the charge. These applications are capable of producing essays, poems, and computing code on command, making them a significant innovation in the tech industry.

Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, recently announced that the company is launching Bard, and invited people in the US and the UK to test the AI chatbot. Pichai stated that after testing Bard with 80,000 Google employees, the chatbot would be tested with the public in the US and Britain as a "first step" before releases in more countries and languages other than English.

In a memo to staff, Pichai emphasized the importance of user feedback in improving the product and the underlying technology. He acknowledged that as more people start to use Bard and test its capabilities, they will inevitably encounter some issues. However, this feedback is critical to the product's improvement.

Google's Bard is distinct from its search engine, and interested individuals can sign up on a waiting list at bard.google.com. Unlike its Microsoft-backed rival, ChatGPT, Bard is able to access and process information from the real world through Google Search and keep its response consistent with search results. Bard is still under development, which means it is constantly learning and improving, while ChatGPT is likely to remain relatively unchanged.

ChatGPT's OpenAI is backed by Microsoft, which earlier this year said it would finance the research company to the tune of billions of US dollars. However, Google has so far proceeded more carefully in its rollout of generative AI to consumers, in contrast to Microsoft's choice to swiftly make the products available despite reports of problems.

As exciting as chatbots can be, they have their faults. In a blog post, Google's vice presidents Sissie Hsiao and Eli Collins emphasized the importance of improving Bard and the underlying technology. They noted that OpenAI recently released a long-awaited update of its AI technology that it said would be safer and more accurate than its predecessor.

The battle between Google's Bard and Microsoft-backed ChatGPT for dominance in the generative AI market is heating up. Microsoft has said that its quick adoption of generative AI has led to increased usage of its Bing search engine in the past few weeks, but it is still a clear underdog to Google, which captures about 85 percent of the global search engine market.

The launch of Google's AI chatbot Bard is a significant move in the battle for dominance in the generative AI market. As the product is tested by more users, it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against its Microsoft-backed rival, ChatGPT. Regardless of which application ultimately comes out on top, the advancements in AI chatbot technology are sure to continue to shape the future of the tech industry.
